Hyperfunctioning carcinoma of the parathyroid gland.

چکیده
Carcinoma of the parathyroid gland is rare, constituting about 1% of most series of patients with hyperparathyroidism. In 1969 a collective review identified forty-six unequivocal cases, and since then a further seven cases have been described in the literature. A brief review of the condition is presented, and one further case of hyperfunctioning adenocarcinoma of the parathyroid gland is reported in detail. Primary treatment is discussed, together with postoperative biochemical problems, and the therapeutic manoeuvres available to deal with recurrences are presented.

99mTc-MIBI SPECT/CT imaging contribution in the diagnosis of patients with hyperparathyroidism
Introduction: Hyperparathyroidism is presented with increased parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion due to hyperfunctioning of one or more of the four parathyroid glands. Primary hyperparathyroidism (p-HPT) can be due to parathyroid adenoma, hyperplasia or carcinoma of the parathyroid gland. Secondary hyperparathyroidism (s-HPT) is usually a response to hypocalcaemia and consecut...

BACKGROUND Positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) with (18)F-fluorocholine (FCH) is routinely performed in patients with prostate cancer. In this clinical context, foci of FCH uptake in the head or in the neck were considered as incidentalomas, except for those suggestive of multiple bone metastases. RESULTS In 8 patients the incidental focus corresponded to a benign tumour...

Intrathyroidal parathyroid carcinoma is an exceedingly rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. A 51-year-old African American female presented with goiter, hyperparathyroidism, and symptomatic hypercalcemia. Sestamibi scan revealed diffuse activity within an enlarged thyroid gland with uptake in the right thyroid lobe suggestive of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue. The patient underwent t...

Parathyromatosis, in which several nodules of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue form in the neck and mediastinum, is a rare cause of recurrent hyperparathyroidism. However, there are some theories regarding the origin of parathyromatosis, and seeding after rupture of the parathyroid gland capsule during surgical removal of a parathyroid lesions is the most regarded one. Herein, we report a 41...
